First Try - First Masters Title for Mark SelbyJohn Spencer, Doug Mountjoy, Terry Griffiths, Stephen Hendry and now add 24 year old Mark Selby to the long list of snooker players who won the British Masters at his first attempt.
After trailing 3-2, Selby went on a roll and beat Englishman Stephen Lee 10-3 at the Wembley Arena. He secured victory in the 13th frame by equaling Ken Doherty's tournament high break of 141 and recording four century breaks in all.
"I've been knocking on the door for a while. The world championship would have been nice last season, but to win the Masters is amazing," said Selby.
He admitted that winning the Masters in his first attempt was a dream come true and meant a lot to him.
Selby added, "I'm only 24, but this week I've felt like I was 40. The nerves obviously do get to me, but I didn't show them and I managed to play good snooker."
Opponent Stephan Lee said of Selby, "The games have got harder all week long, but Mark played some good strong snooker. I'm gutted I've lost, especially for the lots of people who have turned up to watch me. Hopefully there'll be a next time.”
