New Format to Debut at Snooker World Championships Later This Month
Hoping to follow in the success of Twenty20 for cricket, snooker officials have changed the format of the game for the upcoming snooker World Championships. The new format is called “Super6s” and will feature the same number of colors per frame but will only have six reds. This move was to replicate the move by cricket officials which saw success for the sport. This move was to answer critics who said the snooker was a dying sport. The new format was created in the hopes that the sport can be revitalized. The Chairman of World Snooker, Sir Rodney Walker, commented: “As an observer of snooker you cannot churn out the same diet year after year. Look at what Twenty20 has done for cricket. It has brought a whole new audience so what we have in mind we think would be appealing to a younger audience.”
The new format will features matches in the six ball tournament that will take about six to seven minutes to play. The matches would then be the best of five or best of ten frames. Hopefully this change will help the sport and create more fans and viewers.
