World Snooker Championship to Stay in Sheffield
It was recently announced that an agreement was made between World Snooker, Sheffield City Council and the Yorkshire Tourist Board to continue the World Snooker Championship in the city of Sheffield. Many were unsure where the event would move to and many did not want to see it move as the Championship has a long history in Sheffield. The current agreement between World Snooker and Sheffield was due to be up after the 2010 event and Chinese officials wanted to move the Championships there. However at a news conference today officials confirmed that a three year extension has been added to the current contract. This means the Championship will continue to be at the Crucible until 2014.
Sir Rodney Walker the Chairman of World Snooker commented: “It guarantees that the event will stay in Sheffield now for at least five further years. There is an option for a further year subject to a decision yet to be taken on expanding the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.”
Many Snooker pros have stated publicly their dislike of the Championships being moved so they will definitely be happy to hear the news of the extended contract. Since 1977 the Championships have been held at the Crucible theatre and the history of the event runs deep within the city and snooker players.
